Classes

Bali Pop Bargello

Sue has created a Bargello quilt using a Bali Pop! Bali Pops are a collection of 21/2” strips. You could use a Jelly Roll, which is also a collection of 21/2” strips. The end result is stunning. Learn how Sue did it in this two day class and become as hooked on these precuts as the rest of us, that is if you aren’t already! (the quilt is hanging flat in this picture, it is the pattern that makes it look like waves!)

Cost: $ 80.00
Basket of Watercolours

Try your hand at watercolours. The sample quilt was made from the book by Dina Pappas – Watercolor Quilts. Arlene Nicholas has done a beautiful job making this quilt become so realistic and dimensional. There are a number of patterns in the book you can do in class. This technique is very creative and you will learn a lot about colour and value. Class is on Saturday February 12th from 10am – 4pm with a cost of $40.

Cost: $ 40.00
Bottom's Up - PJ Pants

It's time to step up and get all those planned pajama pants done! Who doesn't have a whole bin of fabric devoted to "I'm going to make pj's out of that". There are those of you lurking out there as well that would love to make pj's but aren't quite sure how. Sue Dimmell will show you how and motivate you to finish them up. This is a fun class that will help you brush up on some skills or learn some new ones.

Braided Table Runner

This is a classy, elegant, timeless table runner. It will soon become your favourite. You can do it in an number of colour schemes depending on your mood, décor or purpose. We have seen it done in a number of different colours and it looks great every time. They make excellent gifts as well and it is never too soon to get started on next year! Sue Dimmell teaches this class on Tuesday February 21st from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Cost is $40

Cost: $ 40.00
Breakfast Club

These projects use 21/2” strips but don’t worry if you don’t have any Jelly Rolls, you can cut your own strips from stash. Sue’s samples are mostly made from her stash, she only purchased some background bits here and there. Start now to cut and sort as you have time. This class is meant to be a stash buster. For those of you who have difficulty with “scrappy”, there is some room for control, just ask Sue!

Cost: $ 25.00
Day and Night

Day & Night This technique is just totally awesome! The pattern is made from strips. The illusion is created by using a template. There are variations on making the quilt with two or three contrasting colors. By using 3 or 4 fabric strips the blocks take on a whole new look! It’s all in the fabric choices. Originally it was a difficult paper pieced pattern, but now this time-consuming design has been revamped and made super simple. Two additional projects can be made from the cut-aways. A Mini Star Quilt and Spider Web Quilt are easily made from the scraps. Quilt sizes from table runner to king size. Sue Dimmell will take you through the steps to make this quilt that makes you look like you are a pro, whether you are or not! The class is on Wednesday January 25th or Saturday February 18th from 10:00am – 4:00pm with a cost of $40.

Cost: $ 40.00
Easy Striped Table Runner

This has easily become our “go to” runner. It is so easy and so fast with amazing results every time! You need a border print (stripe) or make your own striped fabric. A few cuts on a 60 degree angle and you are virtually done. With the off cuts you can make two candle mats or table centres. It is that simple. You can either sew the backing on and turn it right side out or you can bind it if you like. We have made numerous samples and have seen many more completed customer projects and we are pleased every time. Mary Lou is the queen of all border stipe runners so let her show you how to become a loyal follower! Class is on Thursday March 15th from 10:00am to 4:00pm. You will finish the entire runner, quilting and all. Bet you can’t stop at just one, you will never look at border stripes the same again! Cost is $40

Cost: $ 40.00
Elaine Quehl - Free Form Curves

Cut curves free hand using a rotary cutter and mat and see how easy it is to sew them together for a truly original design. No measuring required. It looks a lot more complicated than it is! In the half day class you will produce a sample that can be used as a background for an original small quilt (approximately 16” x 20”). The suggested companion class is “Liberated Applique”. It is on the same day in the afternoon. Class is on Saturday March 24th from 9:00am – 12:00pm. Cost is $40

Cost: $ 40.00
Elaine Quehl - In Full Bloom

Elaine will explain and demonstrate how she turns her close-up floral photographs into a pattern suitable for creating a fused wall quilt. In this one-day class, students will work from Elaine’s patterns. Four different patterns will be available for sale at a cost of $10 each: wild rose, lily, tulip, or poppy. Visit the floral gallery of Elaine’s website (www.equarelle.ca) to see samples of the flowers. No sewing machine required for this class. Class has limited space so be sure to sign up early. Friday March 23rd from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Cost is $80

Cost: $ 80.00
Elaine Quehl - Liberated Applique

Liberated applique is a convenient technique for “painting” a picture with fabric. This method allows you to focus on creative design without being overly concerned about perfect technique. You will be cutting pieces of your flower and your leaves free hand with scissors, laying out the pieces until you are happy with your design and then glue basting them lightly into place. You will then sandwich the quilt and free motion stitch your flowers and leaves in place. Elaine uses this techinique when she has a lot of pieces to overlap and doesn’t want the stiffness of multiple layer of fusible web. It also allows her the creative freedom to totally focus on “painting” the flower without having to worry about the technical aspect of adhering fusible to whatever part of fabric to be used. You can create a fantasy flower from your imagination or use pictures of flowers as inspiration. This class works well with the class Free Form Curves. Class is on Saturday March 23rd from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Cost is $40

Cost: $ 40.00
For the Love of Log Cabins

Using one of quilting’s best loved author’s – Eleanor Burns, you will discover or perhaps rediscover the log cabin block. It is easily one of the most versatile quilting blocks. The colour and layout variations are virtually endless. Eleanor Burns writes an amazing book and you will thoroughly enjoy this class. Sue Dimmell is teaching class on Saturday March 10th and 17th from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Cost is $80

Cost: $ 80.00

Hand Quilting

The quilting world is sometimes divided by machine quilters and hand quilters. We think you can be both. We love both methods and both offer something different to the quilter and to the quilt. Sally Borland will show you the joys of hand quilting in this one day class. It is relaxing and peaceful work that can be done inside or outside, in quiet or with your favourite media accompaniment.

I Spy

Warning – you may become addicted! We have one particular customer that has made the I Spy Quilt into an art form. It is so much fun to collect the fabric to make them. You can make them for girls or boys, young or old. You can do them as quilt as you go to make it easier or you can put the whole top together and then decide what to do. The options with this quilt are many. The fun is great. Bring some extra bits to class and you can even swap with others to get more variety into your quilt. See what we mean about fun?! Shirley Feldman is the teacher on Thursday March 1st from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Cost is $40.

International Mystery Club

Wouldn't you rather make a quilt each month instead of a block a month? With our new International Mystery Series class, you can do just that as you make quilts from around the globe! The mystery quilt format keeps the program fun and interesting. We are offering three colour ways each month or choose your own. Each month there's a recipe that ties in with the featured country. The mystery quilts are designed to be able to get the top done in a day! We cannot show you a picture of these quilts because that would spoil the mystery!! Arlene Nicholas will help you solve the mystery on February 5th, March 4th or April 15th from 10 – 4. This is one of those classes that is more of a club, but that doesn’t mean you have to come each month. You are free to sign up for each one or just the ones that work for you. Your pick! Cost is $75. Class is from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Cost: $ 75.00
Introduction to Paper (Foundation) Piecing

Yikes! Paper piecing sometimes brings a bad reaction from people. Usually you either love it or hate it. If you don't know how to do it, then this is the class for you. If you know how to do it but hate it, you might think about this class as well. Mary Lou is a pro at paper piecing and she will teach you in no time flat. If you are among those who are not so fond of it, she may convert you after you learn how to do it properly, with a few tips and tricks from the master!

Cost: $ 20.00
Kids Camp Afternoon

Looking for something for your kids or grandchildren to do for the March Break? We are going to have an afternoon sewing camp for 3 days during the break. Sue Dimmell will teach the kids some sewing and sewing machine basics while they are making two projects. They will start out on a cinch bag. These are those bags you see on virtually every tween and teens back these days. They can use these as a lunch bag, a gym bag or just to carry their “stuff”. After they get that finished they will move on to pajama bottoms or sleep pants as they are sometimes called of late. It will be a great start on getting them sewing and creating many wonderful projects to come not to mention they won’t be complaining of being bored! We are suggesting the minimum age around 10 and we won’t put an upper limit on it – you are never too old to learn! Class will be on Monday March 12th, Tuesday March 13th and Wednesday March 14th from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. They must have a sewing machine in GOOD working order. We cannot stress that enough. If they come to class and we spend half of the time getting the machine to sew, they will not enjoy their experience nor will Sue be able to teach them want they want to learn.

Cost: $ 60.00
Lone Star Wall Hanging or Quilt

This is sometimes one of those intimidating quilts that quilters are afraid to try. I know that I tried one from a magazine early in my quilting career and I ended up with a volcano instead of a nice flat quilt top when I was done! It isn’t that hard but you do need a few pointers before you embark on this mission. Sue Dimmell will help you through this to ensure you have a beautifully pieced and flat top when you are done! Class is Wednesday February 8th and 22nd or Tuesday March 6th and 20th from 10:00am - 4:00pm. Cost is $80.

Cost: $ 80.00

Two easy machine trapunto methods will also be learned at this workshop. It is my hope that this workshop will be both fun and informative for you

Machine Quilting in Sections

In this work shop you will be learning the technique of quilting in sections by trying it yourself. This amazing technique will allow you to quilt large quilts on a regular household sewing machine. Three variations will be taught. Two of these techniques are done so that the finished quilt has no visible sign of being quilted in sections. Various quilts that have been quilted with these methods will be available to see. Other places that these applications could be used will also be explored. Handout for further reference will be available. It is my hope that this workshop will be both fun and informative for you. Knowledge of machine quilting is a pre-requisite.

One Block Wonder

This is one of those quilts that some of us have been dreaming and planning for a long time now. It is the quilt that is made from one fabric. A lot of times it is a less than desirable fabric that you start with. You can use up that fabric that you absolutely had to have five years ago and now you can’t stand it. It is all in the way in which it is stacked, cut and sewn back together that makes it a wonder. There have been some jaw dropping quilts made with this technique. Shirley Feldman will show you how to make your own masterpiece on January 27th or Saturday February 4th from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Stack and Whack is Back!

Those of you who have been around the block, no pun intended, remember this technique from days gone by. It is still as fun and magical as it used to be. For anyone who has not tried it, Stack-n-Whack is an easy way to create quilt blocks with unique kaleidoscope designs. These designs require a set of identical pieces cut from a print fabric. Rather than finding and cutting each piece individually, you can cut and layer a number of large, identical print rectangles to make a stack. Each triangle or wedge cut from the stack produces a block with a kaleidoscope effect. Like most other things to do with quilting, this also can become very addictive. Sue Dimmell is teaching class on Friday March 30th and Friday April 13th from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Cost is $80

Cost: $ 80.00
